    Features

    100% All Natural

Deriving from the non-rainforest areas of Central America, this firestarter formula is made from the wood of old pine stumps left behind after logging.

    No Live Trees Cut

Live trees are never cut to make BetterWood Products. Instead, the sticks are harvested from the stumps of non-endangered pines.

    Versatile Firestarter Option

Ranging in box sizes, these sticks are perfect for indoor/outdoor use and excellent for all things barbecues, campfires, wood stoves, fire pits, and so much more.

    Waterproof

Water can put out a fire before it even starts and that’s why BetterWood’s Fatwood is waterproof and ready-to-use at the drop of a hat.

When you say ''fatwood'' most folks don''t know what you''re talking about. But-- I used to go into the woods with my grandpa to hunt it.
He''d carry a burlap sack and we''d go looking for fallen pine threes. Pretty soon we''d find one and pick away the course rotted part of the tree and in the center we''d find the heart. They never rot. He would fill our sack and we''d carry them to the wood shed. I''d sit there watching him cut little pieces with his ax. I got to pick them up and stack them neatly in his kindling box and we were good to go! What fun-- so I always like to have these around when fireplace weather gets here. A little bit of nostalgia. Thanks AMAZON.

I got a ten pound box of it and just that will last a LONG time because you only use a little to initiate a fire. The pine resin saturated sticks have dried in the wood and aren''t sticky, and they reminded me of some type of brownish/reddish plastic actually, with some even allowing light to glow through them. An odd thing, to be fascinated by a piece of wood like that lol. And speaking of plastic, although they smell nice like burning pine should, they actually burn like they were hunks of plastic as the smoke they put off while burning is black and creates a lot of soot. As the flame catches and the wood heats up, the pine sizzles, liquifies and bubbles on the wood, leading to a pretty intence flame once they really get going. As far as getting them lit goes, they''re not volatile or anything like that and don''t quite catch a flame like a candle wick, so it takes about ten seconds under a match or lighter to get them to catch, and then, there you go.. it starts slow and then really picks up.

My uses are restricted to keeping a stick or two in my camping bag, (the size of a single stick is like a bundle of four pencils) and as an alternative to lighter fluid to get some classic charcoal burning for a BBQ. I''ll take a knife to split them down to smaller pencil sized pieces, then spread them out on the charcoal, or you can put a peice or two beneath the coals if there''s an open area. Light them up and they''ll blaze agressively and long enough to finally start those coals to burn in their own. No more squirting lighter fluid on them twenty times and relighting, or using the "Matchlight", easy-to-light charcoal briquettes that turn to ash and are done glowing in under an hour. Anyway, fat wood is a great application for that, or any other where you need to get a stubborn fire going.
As an added bonus, you''ll love that moment when you open the box and the scent of a pine forest hits your nose and puts a smile on your face :)

I have used this exact product for years and love it - frequent wood-stove user in Colorado foothills. Recently, the fatwood sticks themselves have been much thicker than in the past, resulting in using much more than necessary to get a fire going, in addition to being harder to light. I''ve taken to splitting the strips into thinner pieces to be more efficient. I re-ordered the exact same product today to find that the price went from $31.12 in December 2020 to $54.86 today (February 4, 2021)! Either I pressed the wrong button or there is a ridiculous price increase for some reason. Rating went from 5 stars to 2 for the above-mentioned reasons.

I''ll be looking for other options.

I know there are people who can start a fire with a single match and a wood chip. There are plenty of techniques to keep a fire going overnight. But not me. No. I struggle almost every time. And every morning I start a new fire in a cold stove. Part of this is choice. Most of it isn''t. I''m fond of firestarters. I used to like those duraflame starters but haven''t been able to find them cheaply anymore so I bought these and Lightning Nuggets N100SEB Firestarters Super Economy Box of Fire-Starting Nuggets, 100 Count to compare.
My fires are all with seasoned hardwood, kindling, and newspaper. Using the one of the nuggets I had a modest fire going in about 20 minutes. Using two of the fatwood sticks the fire was roaring along in about 10 minutes.
Here''s the thing. In 30 minutes, the fires were both the same. In fact, it seemed to me that the nugget fire had burned more slowly through the kindling and caught more of the larger logs on fire, while the fatwood had devoured the kindling too quickly to get a good start on the logs. But it didn''t really make a difference. Both fires burned.
The difference comes at the price point, both are around $23. There are a hundred nuggets per box and around a hundred fatwood sticks. But if you use two fatwood sticks per fire (as suggested) that''s only 50 fires compared to a hundred nugget fires.
And if you''re good with only using one per fire? Then you''re golden, go right ahead :)

I''m so frustrated that I have to spend 10 to 15 minutes trying to light a single stick. There''s no oil on the sticks and they are extremely fat not them like they should be. Amazon gets defective products and sells them without telling consumers they don''t actually work. Word of it vice by a bunch of lighters with these because you''re going to need them .

The box that is shown in the picture is not what I got. I received a brown cardboard box tjhat looked like someone ripped it apart and then tried to tape it back together.

I bought a 2lb box of Fatwood from Rural King and every piece was very uniform....length and diameter.

This box was full of varying lengths and diameters.....so much so that I split about 1/4 of the box into smaller pieces, and some of them I split twice. Some pieces were half the length of the others.

Needless to say this will be m,y last purchase of this produce. I recommend looking elsewhere.

I wish I could have given 0 stars.

Seems like they are soaked in a type of lamp oil or something similar. I carry them in zip lock baggies so they do no leach into my pockets pack etc. Two sticks will start most fires short of wet wood, even then if you start with small you will have no trouble getting a nice fire going. Are these the Best option for this sort of thing? That will depend on your use case, absolutely great for around home and I pack up a few and go hiking in a gallon zip lock. They light pretty easily, they do take a spark as well but I find just a lighter or a match seems to work best. These are very easy to feather if you prefer sparks ... hope that helps.
